Because I could not stop for Death – (479)
Because I could not stop for Death –He kindly stopped for me –The Carriage held but just Ourselves –And Immortality. We slowly drove – He knew no hasteAnd I had put awayMy labor and my leisure too,For His Civility –We passed the School, where Children stroveAt Recess – in the Ring –We passed the Fields of Gazing Grain –We passed the Setting Sun –Or rather – He passed Us –The Dews drew quivering and Chill –For only Gossamer, my Gown –My Tippet – only Tulle –We paused before a House that seemedA Swelling of the Ground –The Roof was scarcely visible –The Cornice – in the Ground –Since then – 'tis Centuries – and yetFeels shorter than the DayI first surmised the Horses' HeadsWere toward Eternity –"The Parting Glass"Wailin' Jenny's
Oh all the money that e'er I spent I spent it in good company And all the harm that e'er I've done Alas, it was to none but me And all I've done for want of wit To memory now I can't recall So fill to me the parting glass Good night and joy be with you all Oh all the comrades that e'er I've had Are sorry for my going away And all the sweethearts that e'er I've had Would wish me one more day to stay But since it falls unto my lot That I should rise and you should not I'll gently rise and I'll softly call Good night and joy be with you all Good night and joy be with you allhttps://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/wailinjennys/thepartingglass.html

Meter Iambic, has alternating foot tetrameter and trimeter
Rhyme pattern: It might be A, B,C,B (a couple of stanzas are, but most are not rhyming)
Symbolism: Carriage is a symbol of dying, the setting sun is a symbol of dying, House is a symbol of the grave, Horses heads toward eternity could be a symbol of heaven or death
Type of Poem: Lyric
Type of Stanza: quatrain
2. The meaning of the poem by Emily Dickinson is that she is going quietly into death. Death seems to come slowly and it almost seems like a friend she is taking a ride with. The other poem by Thomas the person wants to fight death, they don't want someone to die.
3. Yes, i think the lyrics to the song Parting Glass are an example of poetry. They have a rhyming scheme and it sounds like poetry, and uses a symbolism. The parting glass symbolizes death. This poem treats death as almost a happy thing, the person dying is serene and peaceful. He seems content with what is happening
Because I Could Not Stop for Death
ReplyDeleteRhyme Pattern: A, B, C, B, D, E, F, G, B
Meter Foot: Iambic, alternating tetrameter and trimeter
Symbolism: passing the school, the fields, and the setting sun could symbolize a person's life as a child, then an adult, and finally dying late in their life. The house underground could reference a grave.
Type of Poem: Lyric
Type of Stanza: quatrain
The two poems present opposing ideas. One is to welcome death gladly, as you would at the end of a long and fulfilling life. The other counters with the idea of your will to live. Instead of understanding death as a natural thing, the poem by Dylan Thomas has this almost terrified aura about it. This reminds me a lot of themes in Harry Potter.
The song Parting Glass is an example of poetry. I think all the songs I've ever heard are a form of free verse. They have refrains, and sometimes even a rhyme scheme.
Because I could not stop death: Emily Dickinson.
ReplyDeleteRhyme Pattern: A, B, C, D, D, E, F, G, B
Metric Foot:Iambic, alternating tetrameter and trimeter
Symbolism: The carriage equals the life she was living. When Emily and Death passed the school house the children where her earlier life. The fields that Death and her passed are her working life, most of her life. And the setting sun is her dying. The under ground house is her life
Type of Poem: Lyric
Type of Stanza: quatrain
The two poems are comparing life and death in different lights. One is saying you need to live a life that is fulfilling to the fullest ability. As the other one is saying life goes by in a blink of a eye and should be welcomed.
The Walling Jennies song is another example of living a for filling life. They are saying that the people you love and that love you want you to be there as long as possible. But in the end death is something that comes no matter what.
